The Future of Delia: The Traveling Witch
Hello Little Ducklings,
This is John Bond, also known as Kaimatten. A few years ago, I spent a few months learning GB Studio 3. I made Delia: The Traveling Witch as a way to understand the basics of programming.
The game ended up being chosen to put on CoolMathGames and continues to be played a LOT on their site as well as on Itch.io even to this day.
Since making Delia, I have co-founded a studio called Tea Witch Games. We're working on releasing our first title soon, Rogue Labyrinth, and I have been wondering on what I want to work on next.
I had always wanted to go back and make games about witches, as well as to have the chance to "polish up" Delia. Thinking back to Delia, it always bothered me just how bad the programming was, especially as I know some people use Delia as a basis for their own games.
Big News Part 1:
DELIA: THE TRAVELING WITCH WILL GET AN UPDATE!
This update will be transferring the game into GBStudio 4. It will fix some graphical bugs, change some bad programming, add a bunch of new art and cutscenes (such as what's included in this post), and make the levels longer/better balanced. There also will be original music!
Currently, the new build is done, but I want to do a bit of public testing to make sure things work properly. I will hold this testing on the Tea Witch Game's Discord Channel soon. My goal is for this new patch to be live within the next few weeks.
Big News Part 2:
After Delia is updated in GBStudio, I will be porting it to Godot so it can be placed (Free) on Steam! I might add a little thing here or there that I always intended for the game but couldn't put in due to the GameBoy's memory limits, but generally speaking my goal is to keep the game the same.
I want to learn Godot more, and this seemed a clear way for me to approach this. I also want to build out Tea Witch Game's Steam presence, and build hype for the next bit of news...
Big News Part 3:
Delia: The Traveling Witch is getting a sequel! (sort of)
I just really want to make more games about witches. Tea Witch Games wants to have a big focus on more casual narrative titles.
The next game I will be working on will have many of the same characters and take place nearby Glutinous Kingdom. It will be another retro-style narrative adventure full of minigames, casual platforming, top down exploration, and lots of wacky people.
I figured to announce this now, but I don't want to get too far into the subject of the sequel just yet, as it is many months out from even getting a Prototype.
TL;DR:
- I've co-founded a Game Studio called Tea Witch Games and we're releasing a game soon (Rogue Labyrinth)
- Delia: The Traveling Witch is getting an update into GB Studio 4, having many fixes and improvements, as well as original music. We will be testing the new build this month on the Tea Witch Games Discord and I hope to post the update in the next few weeks.
- Delia: The Traveling Witch is getting a Steam release (for free!)
- Tea Witch Games is making another witch-themed game! It's sort of a sequel to Delia. More news on this to come.
Thank you all for your support. It's been such a treat to see so many still playing my silly little witch game after so many years. I hope to capture your attention again soon!
